NASSP sponsors the O’Pen Bic Energized Sailing Tour - Who will be the fastest?
Friday, June 26th, 2009The North American Speed Sailing Project is proud to announce its sponsorship of the 2009 O’Pen Bic Energized Sailing Tour. This summer in June the Bic O’Pen Tour starts in California and works its way back to the east coast with a total of over 35 stops at yacht clubs and community sailing centers across America. Nevin Sayre, a multiple US windsurfing national champion and the Bic Junior Sailing Director for the O’Pen Bic said that the purpose of the O’Pen Bic Tour is to expose kids to a modern form of sailing that many kids find fun and attractive. The O’Pen Bic is a modern 9 ft epoxy composite high performance entry level sailboat that carries a 4.5 sq. meter sail. “It is the first opportunity for many kids to get the addicition of speed in sailing, so its only appropriate that the O’pen Bic is connected to NASSP” said Nevin. “Sailing as a sport has traditionally done a great job of offering juniors high-level racing, usually in boats designed more than 50 years ago………now the O’Pen Bic offers a new alternative- either recreationally or competitively – that kids find a passion for. It is also the perfect first step to modern planning boats such as the 29er, 49er, Melges and other sport boats and skiffs.
Mr. Lynch, a NASSP sponsor and kitesurfer from Lynch Associates teamed up again with the NASSP Team to provide Garmin Foretrax 201 GPS units for the Bic O’Pen Tour. The GPS units will be used by the O’Pen Bic sailors at each event to monitor their individual top speeds and answer the question, “Who is the fastest O’Pen Bic sailor?”
The next generation of American speed sailors is being built!
